Beware of COVID-19 Scammers
In all the panic of the Corona Virus pandemic, scammers have a new platform to target: a worried, distracted audience. An article from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reports that scammers are “Setting up websites to sell bogus products, and using fake emails, texts, and social media posts as a ruse to take your money and get your personal information”.
This communication may promote false information about positive cases in your neighborhood, ask you to donate to victims, or offer advice on unproven treatments.
The following tips may improve your safety from scammers:
-Don’t click on unfamiliar links
-Ensure your anti-malware and anti-virus software is up to date
-Be aware of emails claiming they are from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
-Avoid rushing into making a donation to an unfamiliar source specifically requests for gift cards, cash, or wiring money
-Ignore advertisements and offers for vaccinations, treatments, and prevention
